^[†] I created CalendarJournal near the end of May 2018 as an experiment because I realized that too many important notes were getting lost. These notes were not important enough to warrant an entry in BikeJournal yet too laborious to record onto a TallySheet or elsewhere. It is separate from BikeJournal since it only contains minor items that are relevant mostly to the ride on the particular day for which they are recorded. There might be some content that is relevant to other areas of my bicycling Propaedia on a case by case basis.

Journal: Mar 29, 2021

Notes:

At ~6 mi north of Williamsport and just before MP 105 heading north, there are concrete abutments and piers that represent a bridge that is long gone. [ close-up Google satellite view ] It looks as if it might have connected to Lee Ln on the West Virginia side. However, there is no road whatsoever on the Maryland side so I have no idea what or how it connected Maryland to West Virginia. (Also, when looking at the map, the remnants of this bridge are closer to Dam 5 than I recalled while riding the Towpath.
Dam 5 is ~7 miles north of Williamsport. I remember stopping here with Cyndi and others on the Sep 11 NMT tour in Apr 2018. There was an information board that talked about the repopulation of the American Eel on the Potomac River.
Here are some details about the C & O Lockhouse where we stayed on the second night of the Sep 11 NMT Tour:
• the lockhouse is called Four Locks
• it is 9.8 mi north of Williamsport
• it is at Lock 49
There was a lot of tree limbs and branch debris on the Towpath. Part of it was from a recent storm that came through but some of it has probably been there a while. There was only 1 tree down however – just south of MP 111.
The distance from the parking lot at Cushwa Basin in Williamsport to the Western Maryland Rail-Trail just north of Big Pool is slightly under 16 mi.
A scruffy mountain biker came out of the woods on the Potomac River side of Big Pool just as I was riding by. We said hello and he started riding behind me. I created my own frightful episode by realizing that I was a vulnerable old man and that he could be after me. I increased my average speed from 10 mph to over 14 mph to put distance between us. Fortunately, the WMRT was coming up and I would be getting off the Towpath for a while.
As I was riding past Big Pool in the vicinity of MP 114, I started to wonder how a freshwater lake came to be. I researched it and sent the following email to Eric:
As I was riding past BIg Pool yesterday, I began to wonder how the pool itself came to be. It kind of felt to me like a body of water that was somewhat out of place. In fact, it reminds me a bit of Lake Artemisia which is man-made due to construction of the Metro Green Line.
As I was riding along, I thought that maybe the lake was formed by excavating earth for the railroad embankments. But since the canal uses Big Pool and the canal predates the railroad, the timing didn't work out. Then I thought perhaps it was used for the construction of the towpath itself.
Then I found this on the C & O Canal Trust website that implies it was a natural depression that the canal builders took advantage of during construction. I presume they merely filled Big Pool with water from the Potomac just like the canal itself.
I stopped and visited Ft Frederick State Park for the first time. There is not much there but the fort walls themselves are very impressive – especially when realizing that they were build in the mid-1700s during the French & Indian War.
As I rode along today, I thought about the fate of two dear friends, one alive and one deceased: Drew Morrison-Rowe and Dave Lovich.

Journal: May 1, 2021

Notes:

First visit to the World War I Memorial.
• It is quite striking.
• It is at the intersection of 15th St NW and Pennsylvania Ave (formerly Pershing Park).
• It is not completely finished but is going to be awesome.
I somehow reset my Cateye (again!). I think it was done at the WWI Memorial.
• I took the speed for the 2nd half of the ride as a constant for the entire ride.
• Then I recreated the route using RideWithGPS to get the actual total distance.
• Lastly, I calculated the actual time from speed and distance.
I fell short of my M_w goal this week. This is the first time in 2021 that I have not reach the weekly mileage goal. I did things this week that were more important:
• #NewCar: Complete the transaction of getting a Honda CR-V and donating the Honda Pilot.
• Spend time with Drew.

Journal: Ride Report, May 12, 2021

This CalendarJournal entry contains my notes from the ride that Eric and I did today to validate the upcoming WABA ride in NoVa in June. We attempted to ride the Sweet Ride 50 mile route. Unfortunately, the ride did not go well. Not only was it too ambitious of an undertaking for the time allotted but we experienced a failure of our electronics making navigation difficult. We abandoned the effort after covering perhaps only ⅓ of the 50-mile route.

Journal: Ride to Mantucket

Notes:

Eric and I decided to ride to Cheverly today. I was a bit reluctant to visit Dale and Liz. It has been so long since I have seen them that I didn't want to just show up. But that is what we did anyway!
We made this decision while we were in the Navy Yard area so we went up the Anacostia River Trail in order to get there.
The route covered some new streets for me so I recorded / remembered where we rode and created a RideWithGPS map of the unfamiliar portions of the route. Some of the highlights of the route we rode (these are all POI on the map):
- We used a shortcut to get to the Deane Rd underpass of the railroad tracks near the Marvin Gaye Trail.
- We rode northeast on Minnesota, Sheriff, and Addison to get into the area of the Cheverly Metro station.
- The Englewood, Jutewood, State, and 64th portion of the ride to get to Columbia Park Rd is a bit tricky.
- Columbia Park Rd uphill across US-50 to Cheverly Ave is quite dangerous. This road is best navigated in the opposite direction – downhill.
- The only way to navigate between 58th Pl and Cheverly Ave is by riding the sidewalk on the south side of Landover Rd (MD-202). Riding on the road is not an option. Yes, it is that dangerous.
Pizzeria Paradiso in Hyattsville was closed at lunch today so we went to Franklins.
We also stopped at Sligo Golf Course for a beer at the end of the ride.

Guidelines for Maintaining Calendar: 2021

These guidelines represent current practices for my private bicycling calendar. The creation of Calendar-2021 began by making a copy of Calendar-2020. What followed next was a massive amount of editing to remove the details of the 2019 calendar to make way for 2021 content.

The goal is to enter information into this calendar for every day of the year. For days that I ride, the root source of information in these CalendarEntries is the TallySheet.

for days that I ride:
- bgcolor = lightgreen
- the name of the route (base name from CycliStats list followed by an optional qualifier [e.g. MoCo Suburban: Takoma Park])
- the number of miles for the ride (from TallySheet, rounded to the nearest integer),
- a JournalEntry-style name for the ride (from TallySheet, but possibly modified if necessary)
- any milestones that were reached on this ride,
- a link to the map for the ride [optional],
- a link to the CalendarJournal entry for the ride [optional],
- the current cumulative mileage (from CycliStats) for:
  1. Week … with the weekly total on the last day of the week being displayed in boldface,
  2. Month and percentage complete for the month … with the monthly total on the last day of the month being displayed in boldface,
  3. Year … with the annual total on December 31 being displayed in boldface,
for days that I ride on Capital Bikeshare:
- bgcolor = lightgreen
- identify all of the Capital Bikeshare segments I rode from the table, Legend for Capital Bikeshare.
for days where something is happening (ride, meeting, etc):
- bgcolor = wheat
- the name of the ride or event
for days that I don't ride:
- bgcolor = lightsalmon
- my excuse(s) for not riding [optional]

Place significant events on the calendar entry in "red" next to the date as a heads-up. Examples include normal holidays, special occasions (such as birthdays), trips planned, etc. There are always noteworthy bicycling events that are not rides that should be noted on the calendar.

Lastly, the Notes section of each month is a placeholder for rides and events that I want to track annually but may or may not deserve a slot in the calendar.

Update as of Feb 2020: Updating the entries in the Notes section annually has always been a hassle. I tried a new technique which eliminated the laborious graying out of an entry that has not been advanced for the current year. I replaced it with a technique marks each entry as follows:

× note has not been updated for the current year

ride has been entered into the calendar for the current year

Update as of Nov 2017: I added a Comments subsection in Notes for further explanations of calendar entries as necessary.
Update: May 29, 2018: The notion of adding Comments to the Notes never took hold. Therefore, I got serious about adding more details than a mere calendar entry would give and kicked off the concept of CalendarJournal (aka J_Cal). J_Cal exists at the end of the file and contains further information about a ride as well as RouteNotes and more.

Brompton Segments

I don't have a cyclocomputer on my Brompton and I am not inclined to get one either. I like the casual, relaxed, unfold-it-and-go vibe the bike gives me. I often ride the Brompton in an ad hoc manner since it fits that need perfectly. Rather than add each and every one of these ad hoc rides to Brompton Segments, I merely do my best to recall the route I took when I get home, calculate the total mileage via RideWithGPS, record that mileage in the CalendarEntry, and then delete the map.
